I believe there is systemic racism in our country and that black lives matter. My blog is a yoga themed blog, so I thought I would cite some sacred scripture while delivering this message. According to verse 1.2 of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, yoga is the discipline which ends the fluctuations of the mind. It has been my experience that many American yogis know this definition of yoga.
Less well known is this next quote. In his book, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Swami Swatmarama writes that Hatha Yoga should be practiced “In a country where justice is properly administered, where good people live” (1.12). To me this means that I might think I am living a spiritual life, insulated from the collective suffering of my neighbors, but I can't. My mind will be disturbed and prevent spirit from developing.
